San Diego running Back LaDainian Tomlinson is still the best fantasy back. Check out the Sporting News or www.espn.com.

Peterson is the flashy new sports car on the lot, but Tomlinson isn’t exactly a ‘97 Cavalier. In fact, he isn’t even 30 years old yet. So, why the sudden distrust for a guy who should be the clear-cut No. 1 pick again?

Is it L.T.’s knee injury, which sidelined him for the AFC title game loss to the Patriots? If so, what about the knee injury that cost A.P. two games last season? After returning from that injury, Peterson averaged just 3.8 yards per carry in his final five games. Included in that span was one 100-yard game and one 3-yarder. Three yards? L.T. posted four consecutive 100-plus games from Weeks 13-16—when fantasy owners needed him most.

Upon closer inspection, half of Peterson’s rushing TDs and nearly 39 percent of his rushing yards came in two games last season. You can’t count on 200-yard, three-TD efforts every week. Fantasy owners crave consistency—the kind Tomlinson provides.

And let’s not forget the supporting casts. Unlike the Tarvaris Jackson-led Vikings, the Chargers have the threat of a passing game to keep defenses honest. That means more holes—as well as more receptions—for Tomlinson. Peterson averaged just over one catch per game last season; L.T. had his biggest reception total (60) since 2003. And Tomlinson doesn’t have Chester Taylor threatening to steal carries. He doesn’t even have Michael Turner lurking anymore.
