Beyonce

Sunday, August 10th, 2008

Meanwhile, Beyonce–who, incidentally, has long been managed by her own parent, daddy Mathew, and styled by her mother Tina–found herself in the center of controversy this week. Only weeks after her Dreamgirls co-star Jennifer Hudson was accused of being over-Photoshopped in her album-cover photo, allegations surfaced that Beyonce’s likeness was also digitally altered–this time for a new L’Oreal print ad. Big news indeed.

Take the Party Bus in Dallas to see the Cowboys play. Read the daily report at www.dallascowboys.com or read Sports Illustrated. The Party Bus in Dallas would be a fun way to see Romo and Owens attempt to lead the Cowboys to the Super Bowl. They are in a tough division and it should be an interesting year.

World War 1 Arms Race

Thursday, July 17th, 2008

The naval race between Britain and Germany was intensified by the 1906 launch of HMS Dreadnought — a revolutionary craft whose size and power rendered previous battleships obsolete. Britain also maintained a large naval lead in other areas particularly over Germany and Italy. Paul Kennedy pointed out both nations believed Alfred Thayer Mahan’s thesis of command of the sea as vital to great nation status; experience with guerre de course would prove Mahan wrong.

David Stevenson described the arms race as “a self-reinforcing cycle of heightened military preparedness.” David Herrmann viewed the shipbuilding rivalry as part of a general movement in the direction of war. The revisionist Niall Ferguson, however, argued Britain’s ability to maintain an overall lead signified this was not a factor in the oncoming conflict.

The cost of the arms race was felt in both Britain and Germany. The total arms spending by the six Great Powers (Britain, Germany, France, Russia, Austria-Hungary and Italy) increased by 50% between 1908 and 1913.

Dallas Tony Romo and Jessica Simpson

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

Is the romance off between Tony Romo and Jessica Simpson? Fox News says it might be. Go to www.foxnews.com to get the full story.

The Internet has been running rampant this week with reports that Jessica Simpson has split from Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo.

While reps for the Texan twosome have been busy denying the split, a source close to the Romo camp told Pop Tarts that their relationship has hit a “rough patch” but might not be totally over just yet.

After all, he apparently already had plans to get down on one knee for the songstress, and just recently she referred to him as her “future husband” in Glamour magazine.

According to our inside source, Tony was organizing an “intimate dinner for friends and family” to take place in Texas within the next few weeks in anticipation of announcing his engagement to the eldest Simpson sister.

“Every couple has their problems; we’re hoping that they’ll have a break and work it all out,” the source said. Calls to Simpson’s rep were not returned.

So while Romo’s initial matrimonial plans seem to have been put on the back-burner, Jess and Tony are apparently still “talking.”

McCain and Obama after the Hispanic vote.

Sunday, July 13th, 2008

Like eager but awkward suitors, Barack Obama and John McCain are working hard and sometimes fumbling in their efforts to court Hispanic voters who could swing November’s presidential election.

For the African-American Obama and white Anglo McCain, the problem is less one of language than of trying to understand a group whose own diversity can make it a mystery to others. It’s not a simple matter of saying, “Take me to your leaders.”

But that, in essence, is the ground game the presidential candidates and their campaigns have been playing in pitching to voters who could form decisive constituencies in critical battleground states.

“They just come to me and say, ‘Who are the bosses of the Latin community?’” said Patrick Manteiga, who runs a family-owned newspaper for Hispanics in Tampa’s historic Cuban neighborhood of Ybor City. “That’s like coming and asking, ‘Who are the bosses of white America, of the soccer moms?’”

Both candidates are pressing their case in three speeches in as many weeks to Hispanic umbrella groups and working in other ways to make their outreach more sophisticated. Republicans have opened an office in Orlando, where most of the state’s Puerto Ricans live, and Obama opens one this week in Ybor City.
